A recent Huffington Post Divorce article outlined ten things that a party should consider before filing for divorce. The eighth suggestion made by the author was to figure out your plans for the future.
While parties are proceeding through their family law case, often times the parties review what has happened in the past. How much time have I historically spent with my children? What assets and liabilities have we acquired during the marriage? How much money have we traditionally spent as a family?
All of the above questions are important, but when considering alimony, a party needs to think about the future as well. What will my life be like after the divorce? How much money will I need to live in the future?
